Tiwa Savage Rejects “Queen of Afrobeats” Tag, Says Many Female Artists Deserve the Crown
Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has distanced herself from the widely used title “Queen of Afrobeats,” saying she is not comfortable with it because the genre has many female trailblazers who deserve recognition.
She made the disclosure during an interview with Ebro Darden on Apple Music, aired as part of the platform’s promotion for her latest album This One Is Personal.

The episode was released in early September, but the comments gained traction on September 11, 2025, after Apple Music and Ebro shared clips from their conversation.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” Tiwa said.
She explained that while she is grateful for the love and respect, accepting the crown would mean carrying expectations that should not rest on one person.
According to her, the Afrobeats movement has been shaped by several women whose contributions should not be overshadowed.
“It’s not just about me.”
“There are so many women doing amazing things in this space.”
“I don’t want the spotlight to erase their work,” she added.
The singer also stressed that her focus is on storytelling through music, not titles.
Her latest project, This One Is Personal, released in late August, is being celebrated as one of her most vulnerable works, with Apple Music highlighting it as a major moment in her career.
Her comments have since sparked conversations online.
While some fans praised her humility, others argued she has earned the title due to her consistency, international success, and pioneering role in shaping Afrobeats globally.
