The Flying Eagles of Nigeria on Wednesday night stunned hosts and favourites, Argentina, winning by two goals to zero at the Estadio San Juan.
Despite the massive home support received by Argentina, the Flying Eagles were not fazed. They showed that it is possible to thrive even when the odds are against you.
The Flying Eagles sat back and defended for the better part of the game while Javier Mascherano’s boys asked all the questions but the answer never came. The Flying Eagles kept their focus and kept the Argentines out.
Coach Bosso’s boys maintained composure all through the game, they played out the perfect counter-attacking football – sitting back and attacking with purpose and intention on the break. The game plan was executed perfectly.
The first half ended goalless, thanks to solid defending from Bosso’s men. Ibrahim Muhammad then opened the scoring in the 61st minute, making a win seem all the more possible.
The Argentines tried to respond but the boys in green kept them at bay. About 29 minutes later in stoppage time, Haliru Saeki doubled the lead with a diving header, sealing the team’s victory.
The Flying Eagles worked collectively, they showed the real definition of teamwork. To mention standout performers would mean to mention the entire team, but special recognition has to be given to the players on the defensive end: Agbalaka, Ogwuche, Fredrick, and Bameyi, as well as Daga.
Coach Bosso’s substitutions bolstered the attack, with Umeh Emmanuel assisting the opening goal and Haliru Saeki netting the second, putting the icing on the cake.
The Flying Eagles Coach, Ladan Bosso said: “We had a game plan against Argentina & we stuck to it. Beating Argentina is no big deal.”
“Nigeria will go up against the winner between South Korea and Ecuador in the quarterfinals.”
