Toeing the path of holistic and expedited development of the host of Nigeria’s oil and gas behemoths, the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Bonny Kingdom, His Majesty, King Edward William Dappa Pepple III, CON, Perekule XI, has reconstituted the Bonny Environmental Consultants Committee (BECC) to overwatch the associated concerns of the environment in the area.
Inaugurating the reconstituted BECC on Friday, January 8, 2021 at the King Perekule Palace, Bonny, King Pepple III, who was represented by the Chairman of the Bonny Chiefs Council (BCC), Chief Dagogo Claude Wilcox said it was imperative to rejig the committee towards enhancing its capacity to address emerging challenges confronting the environment.
He stated that with the multifaceted impact from various oil and gas activities ongoing around the area there was the need for the kingdom to have a firm grasp on managing the environment which is critical to the survival of the Nigerian economy.
The Bonny Environmental Consultants Committee (BECC), which had Professor Sodienye Abere as pioneer Chairman, now has Professor Howells Hart as Chairman, under the supervision of Chief Haniel Jack-Wilson Pepple, who is the Chief-in-charge of Environment in Bonny Kingdom.
A former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Rivers State University, Howells Hart is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Pollution from Oil and Gas Combustion. He will be working with a globally respected voice in Marine Ecology, Professor Ibitoru Hart as Vice Chairman; alongside Amairiagha Hart, Secretary; and Smart Halliday as Assistant Secretary.
Other members of the committee are: Sidney Sunju Allison, Alfred Allaputa, Christian Tobin, and Inyingi Sabina Brown. The committee also comprise of; Akie Hart, Idaminim Hailsham, Dr. Ibelema Allison Idodo, Godswill Jumbo, Rachael Banigo, Nimi Sunju, and Daddy Dappa, as members.
The low-key event had in attendance a former Chairman of the BCC, Chief Reginald Hart, Secretary of the BCC, Chief Arthur Willie-People, Secretary, King Perekule Palace, Chief Abel Attoni, Chief Jonathan Banigo, and pioneer Chairman of BECC, Prof. Sodienye Abere.
Speaking to Kristina Reports shortly after the inauguration, newly inaugurated Chairman of BECC, Prof. Howells Hart gave kudos to pioneer members of the committee, stating that the people of the area should expect a new template of engagement from his team, stressing that “we are going to see that we do things the way it is supposed to be done”.
“We will bring out a template which the people operating in the kingdom will know; the Bonny Chiefs Council will Know, the monitoring procedures and everything will be acceptable by all parties….”
He assured that his’ would be a new era of engagement with relevant stakeholders towards ensuring that the Bonny environment is properly managed for the overall good of the Nigerian environment given the cosmopolitan status of the LGA.
