Students Escape Tragedy as Four-Storey School Building Collapses in Lagos

Students of Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College narrowly escaped a major tragedy on Monday after the four-storey building housing their school collapsed shortly after they were evacuated in Lagos.

The incident occurred at about midday at No. 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda area of Ogba.

According to eyewitnesses, nursery, primary and secondary school students were quickly evacuated from the building after parts of the structure began to show signs of weakness.

Residents said wooden planks from the roof had fallen earlier, prompting concern among school authorities who immediately raised an alarm and began moving the students out of the building.

A resident told reporters that the students narrowly avoided the disaster.

“It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated from the building that the structure collapsed,” the resident said.

Another eyewitness, Taiwo Ridwan, said the building had started showing signs of distress moments before the incident.

“At first, the house started cracking little by little. The window frames had already fallen apart,” he explained.

“After some minutes, the cement body of the house began peeling off. Not long after that, the building just sank.”

Emergency officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later arrived at the scene and secured the area to prevent further danger.

As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been recorded.

Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the cause of the collapse.
