Social vices such as rape, molestation, brutality, abuse of all types that have life altering and destructive impact on children should be regarded as crimes against humanity.

Perpetrators of such should be banished from communities and given the harshest treatment possible as a way of safeguarding the wellbeing of children and ensuring that they have a wholesome development into adulthood.

This was the message taken to various schools in Bonny Local Government Area yesterday by women of the area under the aegis of Concerned Women of Bonny.

A statement from LG Chairman’s office stated that the “Three-Day Sensitization tour of schools in the LGA by the women was led by the wife of the Executive Chairman of Bonny LGA, Tamunosa Irimagha, accompanied by the Vice Chairman, Anengi Barasua, Leader of the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Miriam Hart, and the Supervisor for Education, Christaben Frank-Hart, amongst others”.

Addressing the pupils at the various schools, Mrs. Irimagha  advised them to adhere to the lessons taught by the resource persons in order to protect their bodies from sexual predators and ensure they report any unwholesome conduct towards them by adults to their parents.

The resource persons were the founder and Executive Director of Adata Bristol Foundation (ABF), Adata Bristol, and Chief Executive Officer of Care Management Consultants, Lolo Hailsham.

This schools’ tour to sensitize the children against social vices was coming on the heels of recent incidents of rape of minors across Rivers State.

Last month recorded the rape of a 9 year old in Bagg Jumbo Community in Bonny LGA by one Fubara Pepple who was currently being remanded in prison custody pending the decision of the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) on the matter.

The women, during the tour, wore T-shirts bearing inscriptions such as: “Protect Our Children”, “Stop Child Rape”, “Stop Child Abuse”, “Stop Child Brutality”, “Stop Child Molestation”, and “Stop Drug Abuse”, among others.

Vice Chairman of Bonny LGA, Mrs. Barasua called on all and sundry to build a critical mass of surveillance, action and advocacy around children with a view to protecting the children from being violated.

She told the children, “No aunty or uncle has the right to touch your private parts,” stressing that. “Children should be protected not innocently violated”.

The Bonny LGA Vice Chairman expressed appreciation to her boss, the Executive Chairman of Bonny, David Irimagha for his support and keying into the vision and mission of eradicating rape and other invidious tendencies in the area.

Schools visited during the tour include Central Primary School, St. Michael’s CAC Primary School, Boyle Memorial Primary School, Government School, and Model Primary School, all in Bonny Island, where branded exercise books were presented to the pupils.

The tour continues today across secondary schools in the area.
