Nemesis caught up with two suspected sea pirates as they were arrested by gallant operatives of the Marine component of the Nigeria Police Force along the Bonny River while attempting to seize a speedboat and kidnap its pilot.

The suspected hoodlums (names withheld) were arrested on Monday, February 5, 2024 close to Peterside in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

A source, who spoke to Kristina Reports on condition of anonymity, said they engaged the boat pilot in a fight when the latter resisted their attempt to take over control of his outboard engine and pilot towards Onne in Eleme LGA.

He said that “this has been their mode of operation, explaining that they come to the Coal Beach in Bonny and pretend to charter a boat to Port Harcourt or some destination”.

“Then along the river they threaten the pilot to change course to their hideout where they dispossess him of the boat and outboard engines.”

When asked to say what happened, the two suspected sea pirates confirmed they actually chartered the boat to go to a fishing settlement close to Peterside on the western flank of the Bonny River but ran out of luck when their attempt to coerce the pilot to make a detour to Onne failed.

“He started fighting with us and when he saw we are stronger than him, he jumped into the river and we didn’t see him again.

“Next thing we saw was the gunboat that came and arrested us and brought us here (Bonny).”

Reacting to the incident, some travelers, who witnessed when the suspects were brought to the Coal Beach, thanked the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their efforts at curbing sea piracy on the Bonny River, saying that the arrest of the two suspect was a welcome development.
