Rivers Commissioner Solicits Horticulturists’ Support in Urban Beautification of Port Harcourt

Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Amaopusenibo Sir Amairigha Edward Hart, says horticulturists have a crucial role to play in the ongoing Garden City restoration exercise aimed at revitalizing Port Harcourt’s beauty and environmental ambiance.

Amaopusenibo Hart said this on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at his office in Port Harcourt during an interactive meeting between management of the Ministry and private horticulturists and flowerists operating around the state capital.

A statement by his Press Secretary, Boma Waribor, disclosed that the Commissioner sued for collaboration between horticulturists and the Ministry, stressing the need for reformed operations to achieve a better city.

“We need horticulturists to bring their expertise and experience to make Port Harcourt a model city,” the Commissioner said, highlighting plans to enhance green spaces and public areas.”

He cautioned on the need for activities of horticulturists to positively impact the environment, and not the other way round, such as obstructing walkways and taking over public spaces meant for other purposes.

He further announced plans of the Ministry to establish a “Flower Village” that will accommodate all flower dealers and horticulturists, with a view to restoring walkways, roadside serenity, and entrench order, towards properly positioning the vocation for improved economic gains.

Earlier, Caroline Nabo, speaking on behalf of her fellow horticulturists and flowerists, outlined the challenges horticulturists face in Port Harcourt, ranging from theft by scavengers and metallic scrap dealers, appealing for assistance to mitigate the challenge, just as others took turns to commend the drive of the Ministry, pledging their support in the effort to green-up Port Harcourt.
