Afrobeats continues its global takeover as Nigerian stars Rema and Tems make it onto former US President Barack Obama’s 2024 summer playlist.

Known for his tradition of sharing his favorite tracks each summer, Obama has once again highlighted the global success of Afrobeats by including these two Nigerian superstars in his latest list.

Tems, who has become a regular on Obama’s playlist, made the cut this year with her hit single ‘Love Me Jeje’. The track, which samples the classic of the same name by Seyi Sodimu and Shaffy Bello, is one of the lead singles from her debut album ‘Born In The Wild’.

This marks the third consecutive year Tems has been featured on Obama’s summer playlist, following her inclusion in 2022 with ‘Vibe Out’ and in 2023 with her BET-winning single ‘Me & U’.

Rema also secured a spot on the prestigious playlist with his upbeat single ‘Yayo’, taken from his recently released sophomore album ‘HEIS’.

Rema is no stranger to Obama’s summer playlist, as his hit single ‘Iron Man’ was featured in 2019, marking the beginning of his international recognition.

The 2024 playlist also showcases talent from across the African continent, with South African sensation Tyla making her debut on the list. Her song ‘Jump’, a pulsating collaboration with Gunna and Skillibeng, caught Obama’s attention following her global success with ‘Water’.

Other tracks on Obama’s 2024 playlist include ‘Texas Hold ’em’ by Beyoncé, ‘A Bar Song’ by Shaboozy, ‘Process’ by H.E.R, and ‘Perro Negro’ by Bad Bunny & Fied. These selections represent a diverse mix of artists from around the world.

With two Afrobeats entries this year, Obama’s 2024 summer playlist sees a slight reduction from the four entries in 2023, where Burna Boy’s ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’, Asake & Olamide’s ‘Amapiano’, Davido & Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailable’, and Tems’ ‘Me & U’ all made the list.

This recognition further solidifies Afrobeats as a global phenomenon, with Nigerian artists continuing to set trends and break barriers on the world stage.
