As the Bonny Local Government Council firms up security measures in the area, the Chairman of the LGA, David Irimagha has restated the determination of his administration to secure the release of the five persons kidnapped at Banigo Community on September 12, 2020.
Irimagha stated this on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 during the commissioning of a gunboat, “Bonny LGA Crime Watch 02” donated by his administration to the Marine Division of the Nigeria Police Force, Bonny Division in Bonny.
Daniel Hart, Theophilus Ibiama, Thompson Allison, Sunny Hart and Dagogo Jackmay were whisked away from a funeral at Finiapiri-Ama in Banigo Community on Saturday, September 12, 2020, and were yet to be released by their captors two month, two weeks and five days later.
He noted that this was in line with the policy thrust of his administration to mainstream the security and wellbeing of the people of the area, explaining that the gunboat would be utilized by the Marine Police in their operations to secure the waterways around Bonny LGA.
The new gunboat was commissioned by the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Bonny Kingdom, His Majesty, King Edward Pepple III, CON, Perekule XI, represented by the Secretary of the King Perekule Palace, Chief Abel Attoni, who was accompanied by the Secretary of the Bonny Chiefs Council (BCC), Chief Arthur Willie-Pepple.
The Bonny LG Chairman was accompanied by his Vice, Anengi Barasua, Deputy Leader of the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Dipinye Jumbo, Secretary to the Bonny LG Council, Omoni Longjohn, Chief of Staff to the Bonny LG Chairman, Uriel John-Jumbo, among others, while handing over the gunboat to the Officer-in-Charge of the Marine Police, Bonny Division, DSP Solomon Adeniyi.
Also present were the heads of some security agencies in Bonny LGA including the Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base, Nigerian Navy, Bonny, Navy Capt. Badamasi Yahuza, who was represented by the Base Intelligence Officer (BIO), Lt. Nasir Yusuf, Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Bonny, SP Usman Sadiq, Divisional Officer, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kaizer Nelson, among others.
Congratulating the Bonny LG Chairman on his successful delivery of the gunboat to boost security operations in the area, the lawmaker representing Bonny Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Abinye Pepple stated that security of lives and properties of the citizens was a fundamental responsibility of the executive arm of government as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“On behalf of my dear wife and the entire constituency, I congratulate you, Mr. Chairman, for this unparalleled feat of policing the constituency of which I am representing”.
“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, section 33 has to do with lives, section 43 has to do with properties, and if you combine both sections 33 and 43 it has to do with lives and properties of citizens of Nigeria.”
“So, what the Chairman has done is a constitutional mandate to replicate his responsibility as the chief accounting officer of Bonny Local Government Council.”
On hand to dedicate the new gunboat was the Dean of the Christ Army Church (CAC), Bonny, Reverend Dappa Opubo Abbey.
Responding, DSP Solomon Adeniyi thanked the Bonny LGA Chairman for his support to the security agencies, promising that he and his men would optimally utilize the gunboats to escalate their campaign against sea piracy and other criminal activities on the Bonny waterways.
The commissioning of the gunboat has become more than imperative with the increasing spate of attacks on travelers along the Bonny River and adjoining waterways by daredevil sea pirates on a near daily basis.
The past few weeks have witnessed multiple attacks by sea pirates who robbed the passengers of their valuables, took away an undisclosed number of speedboats, and reportedly kidnapped some passengers.
In one of the attacks, the hoodlums cut some of the passengers with their machetes in retaliation for the sinking of their boat by the pilot of the commercial speedboat and the subsequent arrest of one of them identified as Clifford George, who is currently cooling his heels with the Police in Port Harcourt.
