PREAMBLE
Following the industrial crisis on Saturday 7th May 2022 in Bonny Island where the indigenes protested against poor remuneration and lack of jobs at the NLNG Train 7 Project site, in a meeting held between the Bonny Kingdom Local Content Compliance Committee (BKLCCC), Saipem, Chiyoda and Daewoo Joint Ventures (SCD-JV) and Nigeria LNG Limited representatives on Wednesday 11 May 2022 at Port Harcourt, the following positions were taken:
1. That SCD-JV and their subcontractors should speedily improve on the employment of Bonny youths.
2. BKLCCC frowned at the neglect of the proposed payment of the baseline salary of N336,000 (three hundred and thirty-six thousand) Naira as contained in the communiqué issued on the 13th of November 2021 between BKLCCC and the Bonny Kingdom Committee on Employment and Youth Matters, Bonny Kingdom Professionals and all Unions and Associations in charge of construction workers in Bonny Kingdom. (See Communique attached)
3. In view of the above, BKLCCC directed SCD-JV as the consortium and NLNG Ltd to immediately convene a meeting between the SCD-JV management and the workers union for an upward review of salaries and allowances of workers and its implementation within 7 working days in line with our aforesaid proposed salary baseline of N336,000.00 (Three Hundred and Thirty Six Thousand Naira) to sustain a peaceful operating environment on the Island;
4. SCD-JV should also commence immediate engagement with the MOU Implementation/Monitoring Committee of BKLCCC.
5. Finally SCD-JV and NLNG representatives profusely thanked the Bonny Chiefs’ Council for their swift intervention in arresting and containing the crisis. They also appreciated the leadership of Bonny Youth Federation and the entire youths of Bonny Kingdom for heeding to the advice of the traditional institution and allowing peace to reign.
