After almost of a month of deafening silence over the gruesome killings of about 12 ladies in different hotels in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the State Government has finally spoken up on the issue.

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, the Rivers State Government said it was intensifying efforts at halting the killings and bringing the perpetrators to face the full wrath of the law.

This is coming as the killings have intensified in the past days. Just yesterday, two ladies were strangled to death in an unnamed hotel along Odili Road, in the Abuloma axis of Port Harcourt.

Earlier today, a Facebook user, Abigo Ikpoki Emmanuella posted on her wall that the alleged killers have resorted to abduction of women, saying that a friend of hers witnessed the abduction of a lady along Abuloma Road last night.

Also, another Facebook user, Ebony Berry announced that her sister’s colleague that works with a bank in Port Harcourt was abducted where she stopped to buy corn, leaving her car behind.

There are concerns that the Nyesom Wike led Government in Rivers State has been lethargic in the handling of the situation which has continued to escalate with new incidences occurring almost on a daily basis.

In an unsigned statement by the Government House Press Unit and circulated to Media houses via email earlier today, the Government said the “Rivers State Security Council is working round the clock to ensure that the recent disturbing killing of young women is stopped and the perpetrators made to face the full weight of the law.”

“Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo stated that over the last few weeks, the State Security Council under the leadership of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has put in place measures to secure the lives of young women who have been targeted by serial killers.”

The statement further said that Danagogo stated that “the security agencies have been mandated to work with hotels and their management to implement security measures that will end the ugly trend.”

“Dr Tammy Danagogo said that the Rivers State Government remains committed to the security of lives and property.”

“He said in no distant time, the Rivers State Security Council will end the ugly trend. He added that the Government through relevant agencies is embarking on mass sensitization of the people on security measures.”

“The Secretary to the Rivers State Government assured Rivers people that the Wike Administration will continue to work for the promotion of security.”

So far, about 12 young ladies have been killed in different hotels across the city. The first incident, which victim was identified as Maureen Ewuru, a single mother of two kids, was at a hotel in D/Line.

Another involving Precious Steve, an Edo State native, a Mass Communication graduate of the Rivers State University, and mother of three boys and a girl, was at Odili Road where her corpse was found dumped by the roadside.

The latest, Nikky Dora was able to tell her story before she eventually died how she and her colleague at the hotel where she works along Odili Road were attacked by men who lodged in the hotel when they went to attend to their requests.
