Plateau Boils as fresh violence Erupt in Jos leaving many dead
It was a holy day in the city of Jos, Plateau State when fresh violence erupted in many parts of the city reportedly leaving many dead on Sunday. Scores of houses were burnt during the attack which spread to Dutse Uku and Rikkos communities.
The Plateau State command of Nigeria Police Force, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mathias Tyopev, confirmed the attack, disclosing that security operatives have been dispatched to the affected areas where the violence erupted to calm the atmosphere.
In his words, “we have received reports of tension around Dutse Uku, Rikkos, Cele Bridge and we mobilized our personnel to the area.
“As we speak, the Area Commander, Jos metropolis is there on ground”.
Some residence of the area revealed that a boy, who was from Angwan Miango, was found dead along the boundary between neighbouring Rikkos and the community (Angwan Miango). Incidentally, the neighbouring Rikkos communities are occupied by the Hausas.
The residents claimed that there has been rising tension in the area since last week. An eye witness from Angwan Miango, who preferred anonymity, revealed that the said boy who was found dead was killed at a stream which ran across Angwan Miango and Rikkos communities.
He claimed that that was what led to a reprisal attack on Rikkos that brought about the killings.
We also learnt that some churches that heard about the incoming attacks ended their services for safety and to be on guard.
The exact number of casualties was yet unknown as at time of writing this report.
