The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) has come under fire for failing to respond to a seven-day ultimatum regarding the $300 million compensation fund owed to the Ogoni people.

The deadline, issued by the Ogoni Liberation Initiative (OLI), expired 2 days ago without any statement or action from the corporation, sparking renewed criticism over its handling of the long-standing issue.

In a statement, OLI President and Chief Executive Officer, , Douglas Fabeke, condemned NNPCL’s silence, describing it as a clear display of “incompetence, insensitivity, and disregard for the suffering of our people.”

He further accused the corporation’s leadership of lacking the capacity to uphold justice and accountability, calling for immediate government intervention.

“We call on His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, to take immediate action by removing the corrupt leadership of NNPCL. The Ogoni people will not stand idly by while our rights are trampled upon.”

The Ogoni community has long fought for environmental justice and compensation for the devastation caused by oil exploration in the region.

The $300 million compensation fund, which remains unpaid, is part of ongoing efforts to address these historical grievances.

With NNPCL’s continued silence, the Ogoni Liberation Initiative has vowed to escalate its demands. “From today, we are going to enhance our demand to the next level while we prepare for our international press conference.”

As tensions rise, pressure is mounting on the federal government and NNPCL to provide clarity on the status of the compensation and address the concerns of the Ogoni people.
