Taking a precise and cursory look into the deeds, actions and sterling performance of the Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District, Senator (Chief) George Thompson Sekibo in the upper legislative chambers of the National Assembly, as the 9th Senate of the Federal republic of Nigeria marks its first year in office, it appears there are several positive deliverables to celebrate.
This stance is adduced verity by the avalanche of pro-people projects, programmes and interventions in diverse aspect of the senatorial district he has been divinely seconded to represent.
Within the period under review, Senator George Sekibo has commendably attracted qualitative projects to his primary constituency, the Rivers East Senatorial District that can be attested by anyone. With a devout sense of responsibility to his constituents and humanity, in general, Sekibo embarked on the Elderly and Widows Helpline, a programme that gives a platform for the checking and treatment of all eye related matters with provision of lenses to the beneficiaries.
In line with his stance and firm belief in both human and infrastructural development, Senator Sekibo attracted several roads, rural and urban electrification projects to all the local government areas under his jurisdiction with provision of electric transformers, youths and women skills acquisition in all eight local government areas of the Rivers East Senatorial District.
George Sekibo in his quest for quality education for his constituents, awarded twenty (20) scholarships to deserving students of his Senatorial District who are currently studying in Cotonou.
In other to engage the youths of his Senatorial District into meaningful ventures, the Senator embarked on the training of 50 Social Media Practitioners with the provisions of starter packs at the end of the training.
He also engaged 50 women in various vocations, a programme which has prompted empowered the beneficiaries.
The Distinguished Senator George Sekibo has grown from the rank and file of politics in Rivers State and Nigeria, rising from the position of Chairman of the then Okrika/Oyigbo/Tai/ Eleme Local Government Area, where he served at the grassroots well, thus laying the platform for his ascendance to the envious position of a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. An architect by profession, Senator Sekibo, upon the emergence of Sir (Dr.) Peter Odili as Governor of Rivers State was appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Projects, a position he held and served with such an emphatic enthusiasm.
In the second tenure of the Governor Odili led administration, Senator George Sekibo, who is the Igo Alabo of Kirike Se, emerged as the member representing Okrika/Ogu/Bolo Constituency in the House of Representatives and due to his quality representation and the will to render topnotch and people-oriented service and was later given the mandate to represent the people of Rivers East Senatorial District in the Senate in 2007, a position he has held productively and eventfully.
Within the period, Senator George Sekibo, who holds a Master’ degree in Environmental Engineering, successfully influenced the inclusion of a bridge to link Port Harcourt to Okrika in the budget of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to the Senate. He also attracted the sandfilling project of Ekerekana/Okochiri Sandfilling and shore protection project.
As the leader of the Rivers Caucus in the National Assembly, Senator Sekibo did not only distinguish himself as an eloquently sound voice in the apex parliament, he sponsored several bills and motions focused on strengthening the institutions of the Nigerian State and enhancing good governance in the country. His celebrated know-how, vast experience, legendary expertise and seasoned grasp of critical issues within the legislative space endeared him to be appointed the head of several committees in both the Green and Red Chambers and a member of others of which he has served creditably well.
As an opposition lawmaker in the Red Chamber, Senator Sekibo maintains decorum and places premium on his call to serve as a Nigerian Senator and has strenuously divorced himself from needless attachments to sentiments and mundane rifts, hence his consistent earned respect.
