The Bonny Youth Federation (BYF) has demanded a probe of the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of an aged woman in the New Jerusalem axis of Bonny Island during an operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

General Secretary of the BYF, Omoni Sylvanus made this demand on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 in an interview with Kristina Reports in Bonny, Rivers State.

He stated that it was expedient that the relevant law enforcement agencies investigate properly what led to the death of the aged woman, stressing that the incident was strange and vexatious as Bonny Island is known for its hospitality and accommodating disposition and has continued to be a conducive home for residents from every part of the world.

“We woke up this morning with a distress call that there is a protest by some youths and some residents from the New Jerusalem axis in Bonny.

“We tried to enquire what actually happened and what is going on and we were told that there was an operation last night by the NDLEA in conjunction with the Nigerian Navy going after drug dealers and people who are involved in this whole drug issue.”

“But I think that in the course of their operation we got information that an aged woman died in the course of that operation.

The BYF General Secretary, who was accompanied by the Director of Pollution and Environment, Sotonye Allison, appealed to youths of the area to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to wade into the matter.

“So, we had to come out to ensure that we maintain peace and order while the security agencies get involved and investigate the matter and know the true cause of actually transpired. As it stands we are getting different and conflicting information.

“We are here to ensure that first there is peace in Bonny Island while the relevant authorities take care of what is actually going on.”
