The Bonny Gentlemen’s League (BGL) has elected a new set of Executive Officers to pilot its affairs for the next two years while also appraising the governance and developmental trajectory of Bonny Local Government Area taking into account the strategic input of key stakeholders.
The League announced this via a communique issued after a One-Day Open Forum/Town Hall Meeting the League held as part of its 43d Annual Convention/Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Bonny, Rivers State between Saturday and Sunday, December 24-25, 2022.
The communique signed by BGL’s Chancellor; Squadron Leader Olam AllwelI-Brown (Rtd.), Registrar; Victor Jumbo, PhD, and Chairman, Current and National Affairs Committee; Torudoghubo Jamaica, revealed that the newly elected officials include Squadron Leader Olam Allwell-Brown (Rtd.); Chancellor, Victor Jumbo, PhD; Registrar, Alexander Wilcox; Deputy Registrar, Ibietonye Benjamin; Director of Finance, Anthony Fombo; Director of Exchequer, Tonye Ekong; Director of Publicity, Fiabema Hailsham; Director of Socials/Welfare, Ethelbert Oko-Jumbo; Chief Whip, and Dagogo Hart; Ex-Officio.
The League also appraised the governance and developmental situation of Bonny LGA, insisting that a lot still has to be done to compensate for its mighty contributions to the national and state economy, commending critical stakeholders such as the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), and the current administration of the Bonny Local Government Council for aligning with and working towards assuaging the governance and developmental challenges facing the area.
It called out the Rivers State Government led by outgoing Governor, Nyesom Wike to close the developmental gaps of his eight years’ rule in the State by awarding legacy projects and tasking his successor in office to see to their actualization, listing projects such as “the construction of internal roads in Bonny Metropolis and the dualization of the King William Dappa Pepple Road from Coal Beach to Shell gate to compensate for the glaring infrastructure deficit in the LGA”.
It also berated the Niger Delta Development Commission for abandoning the Bonny Ring Road project, charging the “Chairman and members of the reconstituted Board of the Commission to revitalize the execution of the project in order to link the towns and satellite communities in Bonny East to the Metropolis and improve vital communication infrastructure and overall economy of the Local Government Area”.
Applauding the Federal Government for the NLNG Train 7 Project, the League urged the project’s EPC contractor, “SCD Joint Venture, and all other Train 7 Project contractors to ensure strict compliance with Community Content obligations as enshrined in the Local Content Act and the Project Memorandum of Understanding (PMOU) executed with the Bonny Local Content Compliance Committee (BKLCCC) in order to avoid restiveness in the Kingdom, industrial crisis on site and to enhance seamless project execution and delivery”.
The League commended the Federal Government and NLNG on the spate of work on the ongoing Bodo-Bonny Road project, urging “the construction company, Julius Berger Plc to maintain the momentum and ensure timely completion and delivery of the project to fast-track the development of Bonny Local Government Area and environs”.
Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Dame Anengi Claude-Wilcox got some patting on the back from the league for what it referred to as “her laudable strides, especially, in the areas of Peace and Security in the Kingdom and tremendous reduction in the incidences of piracy on our waterways”.
The Bonny Gentlemen’s League describes itself as “a frontline socio-cultural organization of distinguished gentlemen of diverse professions and vocations, committed to the sustainable human, economic and physical development of Bonny Kingdom and Local Government Area”.
It further disclosed that it “has also recently transformed into a community-based non-governmental organization (NGO) to operationalize its raison detre, including robust advocacy for public policy and good governance, and to leverage on partnerships towards the achievement of definitive goals for accelerated development at the grassroots level”.
