While the Falconets are heavy favourites against the Benin Republic in the semi-final of the WAFU B U20 Women’s Cup in Kumasi, Ghana. The Flying Eagles have their work cut out for them against hosts and highflyers, Argentina in the U20 WC.
The Nigerian youngsters would both be in action on the 31st of May – today, in a bid to remain on the international scene and possibly bring home the ultimate price.
Ladies first
The Falconets go into the game against the Benin Republic as favourites. They have been clinical in front of goal putting 16 at the back of the net. Six of the goals came in against Togo, seven against Niger Republic and three against Burkina Faso.
The Falconets forward, Opeyemi Ajakaye netted six of the goals, making her the tournament’s leading goalscorer. Opeyemi would be looking to add to her tally when Nigeria face Benin Republic at 7:30 Nigerian time.
Also, note that the Falconets are yet to concede in the tournament. The Falconets have shown a high level of determination and have been dominant and relentless. Nothing less is expected of them.
The Flying Eagles, on the other hand, were soaring in the group stages, winning their first two games against Dominican Republic and Italy, until the hungry Brazilians bit off their wings, which saw them finish third in Group D, setting up a Round of 16 tie with hosts Argentina.
Argentina won all three of their group games, scoring ten and conceding just one. The Flying Eagles would be looking to upset the six-time champions when they go head-to-head by 10 pm today.
The Flying Eagles coach, Landan Bosso said :
“This is the World Cup and it is wrong to under-rate any team. We won two of our three matches and had the same number of points in our group as Brazil and Italy. We are no pushovers in this campaign.
“It is going to be an interesting game. We want the quarter-final ticket and the Argentines also want the quarter-final ticket. We will go in there and dig our feet into the ground.”
