Enyimba played out a 1-1 draw against Rivers United on Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos to clinch a record-breaking, ninth Nigeria Premier League title.

Ekene Awazie gave the People’s Elephant the lead in the 39th minute before Rivers United found their equalizer through Nwagua eight minutes after.

A draw was enough to see Enyimba lift the trophy and reduce Rivers United to third place, bagging a N100 million. The last time they won was in 2019, also in an abridged version of the league.

Enyimba, Remo Stars and Rivers United finished level on points with nine after five games but with a goal difference of 4, 3, and 2 respectively.

Remo Stars secured a spot in the continent winning 1-0 against Bendel Insurance courtesy of Qudus Akanni’s goal but had to wait for the results from the game between Rivers United and Enyimba to determine which of the spots, the CAF Champions League or the Confederation Cup.

Rivers United’s 1-1 draw put Remo Stars in second and clinched a CAF Champions League place.

Finidi George won his first title as a coach, with Enyimba. Enyimba forward, Emeka Obioma won the golden boot with 16 goals, bagging N500,000 in prize money.

Bendel Insurance suffered back-to-back defeats and finished without clinching a continental spot. The Insurance side still has an opportunity to secure continental football, provided they defeat Enugu Rangers in the Federation Cup.
