While the Nigeria Police Force continue to quell citizens’ agitations and frustrations about the brutality of the Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other tactical squad personnel on some innocent Nigerians, some of the country’s heavyweights in the music industry today, October 8, 2020, took to the streets of Lagos to voice out their displeasures on the inhumane treatments of SARS personnel of recent and in the past.
The likes of the son of the country’s legal luminary, Mr Femi Falana in person of Falz, who spearheaded the protest, Runtown, Tiwa Savage, Rudeboy and others all came out for the peaceful protest. Their bravery motivated youths in the city to join in the protest.
The youths are of the opinion that the government should abolish SARS but according to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Frank Mba, during an Instagram Live Chat with Lagos-based artiste, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley, on Monday, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) cannot be scrapped from the Force because of the ongoing fight against crimes in the country.
“What we need to do is to reform SARS and make them responsive, responsible and make them work in accordance with laid down procedures. We need them to continue to respond to violent crimes.
“We need them to continue to respond to armed robberies. We need them to continue to respond to kidnappings, said the PRO.
Mba hinted that the Force is currently reforming the operations of SARS officers to curb their excesses.
However, the peaceful protest held today in the state according to Falz was for the government and the police to scrap SARS from the system.
“We have to ginger everyone, we are going to let our intentions be known we don’t want SARS anymore. They come with all sorts of stories about reform.
“What they are allowed and what they aren’t allowed to do but it’s about time to completely abolish SARS and that’s why we are here,” said Falz.
