Citizens have reacted to the speech made by Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, regarding the nationwide protest against bad governance carried out in various states.

In the broadcast, which took place on Sunday, August 4, 2024, the president urged citizens to end the protest and engage in dialogue.

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu

“Under the circumstances, I hereby enjoin protesters and the organizers to suspend any further protests and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity. Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all—regardless of age, party, tribe, religion, or other divides—to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation. To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation to threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you,” he said.

Reacting to the broadcast, citizens lamented that the president had not addressed the issues that sparked the protest, urging him to lower the price of fuel to bring about change in the country.

Ogechi Godstime, in a chat with Kristina Reports, expressed frustration, noting that the president did not offer any solutions to their problems.

“All the things he said, he didn’t even say how he is going to help us. I am angry. Even the killings during the protest were unnecessary. How can the protest stop when he has not addressed the real issues?”

Precious Uzonwanne also noted that the issues remain unaddressed, asserting that “he didn’t really address any points; he was just talking randomly, and that’s no solution to the arising matters of the nation”.

Another Nigerian, who identified himself as Chikwado, called the speech self-praise, saying “this is completely self-praise and doesn’t have anything to do with making an attempt for change”.

A lady named Love Bien said the issue is with fuel, and the price should be reduced.

“Fuel is now N900 per litre. This has been the beginning of our troubles since last year before Tinubu took over. Can they bring down the price of fuel and see how the price of every other commodity will fall? He should stop speaking English and address our issues. This man doesn’t even care. Chai, God.”

As citizens protest, they are calling on the Nigerian government to make policies that will ease the cost of living and allow them to thrive.
