Nigerian social media is alive with reactions trailing an Instablog9ja post by a lady who identified herself as Cumbae Uchendu who is accusing Councillor representing Ward 3 in Etche Local Government Legislative Assembly of Rivers State, Onwume Chetachi of raping her sister in a hotel in Abuja.

Uchendu claims Onwume called for his bill and when the unnamed sister took it to him in his room, he forcefully raped her.

According to her, “Honourable Chetachi Onwume, a Councillor from Rivers State, sexually molested my sister on Monday at her workplace where he lodged at Gwarimpa, Abuja.”

“She went in to give him his bill as he requested. He then grabbed her, strangled her and raped her. He deposited his sperm in her. Yesterday morning having involved an activist/lawyer, he pleaded and offered a compensation of 50,000 which my sister and her lawyer refused.”

“When the police got involved he disappeared. The hotel management claimed they didn’t see him leave. My sister is still in the hospital. This morning at Gwarimpa police station where we reported they said the case will be forwarded to the command where such cases are handled. He has locked his Facebook account which as at yesterday was active. We hope we get justice.”

In the same vein, a Facebook user, Iyoyojie Adesua, also posted on her timeline her own version of the incident.

“Honourable Chetachi Onwume, you lodged in a hotel, a girl that was doing her job. Trying to survive. You asked her to bring your bill. She brought it. And you grabbed her, raped her, even deposited sperm in her. She is currently at the hospital.”

“This breaks my heart because the high level of under employment and unemployment makes graduate takes this kind of job where they under pay them and still suffer all manner of emotional, verbal and even sexual abuse from animals.”

The he goat offered 50k for compensation when lawyers and human rights activists got involved, now he has lodged out of the hotel, nobody knows his whereabouts. The case is with the police already.”

“The hotel manager said they don’t know when he lodged out but I bet he paid them money to shut up. This is why I always advocate for work and go home at your closing time because the place you work really doesn’t give a shit about you.”

I pray justice is served. Let them remove him as a councillor first. Then arrest him, Take him to court and sentence him. Let other rapists learn. You don’t Lodge in a hotel and start abusing the female staff. No, it’s wrong. They were not employed for your sexual satisfaction.”

“Hotel managers and owners need to start looking at ways to protect their staff interests. It is not a crime to work in a hotel.”

Twist to the tale

Kristina Reports checked with another councillor who traveled with Onwume Chetachi to Abuja and lodged in the same hotel with him. Though, he preferred anonymity, he volunteered that actually, Onwume had a stint with the girl in question but it was a consensual deal.

He further disclosed that the girl agreed to spend the night with the now absconded councillor on an agreed price but curiously, Onwume refused to pay the agreed amount which led to a disagreement between the duo, only for the girl to claim she was raped.

Attempts by Kristina Reports to get in touch with Uchendu to confirm this position proved abortive as her Instagram account with which she made the post was no longer available online.
