Students and prospective corps members from the University of Uyo have expressed their concerns over the recent incessant abduction of corps members traveling from Uyo to the Northern states, specifically Zamfara and Kogi States.
It can be recalled that in August 2023, eight prospective corps members as well as their driver were abducted on their way to Zamfara State for the three-week orientation camp which marked the beginning of their one-year compulsory service to the country.
Two victims were rescued while the others have remained in the net of the abductors till date.
Subsequently, on Saturday, November 11, 2023 prospective corps members were abducted on their way to Kogi State for their national assignment.
It is not very clear how many of these corps members have been released, however, it is on record that some of those whose families could afford the ransom demanded have been released while the others remain in captivity.
Although not a lot of efforts have been seen by the families or the general public, the NYSC claims that actions are being taken to ensure the safe release of the abductees and have asked the families of these students to pray and be calm as their children will return to them safe and sound.
In an interview with Kristina Reports at the Convocation Park in the University of Uyo where a lot of graduates were seen getting mobilized for NYSC, a lot of the students expressed their fear and worries due to the recent incidents and prayed not to be sent to the North.
According to Nsikak Friday, he would rather stay home than embark on a journey to the North if that is where he is posted. He explained that he has always wanted to serve in the north but due to the recent events, that is no longer the case.
“I have always wanted to serve in the north. I am fascinated by their language, food and way of life which is why when people spoke about the insecurity in the north, I didn’t mind, I still wanted to serve in the north. But right now, no way. I will not be doing that. If I am posted to the north, I will stay home and then remobilize next year.”
Joy Ekpo said “God will not allow me to be sent to the North. There is no reason to travel all the way with all the insecurity that is happening. People that were kidnapped since August have not been released, why would I want to put my family and friends through so much pain?”
