Against the backdrop of controversies shrouding the purported negotiations between some workers and the management of Daewoo Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited (DECN), the National Association of Plant Operators (NAPO) has dissolved the elected executives of its DECN/ NLNG Train 7 Project Branch.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of NAPO, Rivers State Council, Monday Mbasisi, and made exclusively available to Kristina Reports on Sunday, October 2, 2022, the association said its DECN/NLNG Train 7 Project Branch members passed a Vote of No Confidence on the said executives at its meeting same day in Bonny.
The statement said that the decision, which effectively exited the said executives from the leadership of the association in Bonny LGA, was followed by the election of Six-Member Caretaker Committee with Iyowuna Brown as Chairman; Felix Pepple, Vice Chairman; John Ibietonye Jumbo, Secretary; Michael Njoku, Financial Secretary; Jubril Adams Femi, Treasurer; and Kalanna Brown, as Ex-Officio.
Mbasisi stated that “their assignment takes effect immediately from Sunday, the 2nd day of October 2022 to the 1st day of April 2023.”
“In a unanimous decision, over 600 members of the branch in the general meeting held on Sunday, 2nd October 2022 declared a Vote of No Confidence on the entire elected Daewoo Branch Excos and nominated a Six (6) Man Caretaker Committee to lead and take care of the responsibilities of the members of the branch as Representatives of the Workers for 6 months.”
“Forthwith, we, the NAC, in conjunction with the RSEC, is hereby directing all members of NAPO that constitute 98% of the workforce of Daewoo E&C Nig (DECN)/Nigeria LNG Train 7 Gas Plant Construction Project to give them all the support needed to pilot the affairs of the Association in collaboration with the various organs of NAPO.”
“With this groundbreaking decision, henceforth, all actions and activities taken by any group or groups of individuals is considered null and void with NO effect on the members of NAPO in the employ of Daewoo E&C Nig (DECN)/Nigeria LNG Train 7 Gas Plant Construction Project, Bonny LGA, Rivers State, Nigeria.”
“The management of Daewoo E&C Nig (DECN), the Press, the Security Agencies and the General Public should take note.”
NAPO had in the past one month being in the trenches with Daewoo E&C Nigeria Limited over work conditions and violation of the rights of the workers.
While NAPO says about 200 workers in the employ of DECN on the NLNG Train 7 Project site have signed up and communicated their decision to join NAPO, asking their employer to relate with them as such, DECN has objected, asserting that it cannot deal with NAPO given that it was yet an unregistered trade union.
