President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, amongst other political officeholders risk facing charges if they fail to declare the assets before May 29, 2019.
This is coming on the heels of an ultimatum issued by the Code of Conduct Bureau that officials in the excutive arm declare their assets on or before May 28, 2019n and lawmakers on or before June 8, 2019.
The CCB, through its Chief Press Officer, Charity Utok, buttressed that new political officeholders were allowed for the period of three months to declare their assets while those leaving must declare immediately after vacating their offices.
She, however, stressed that the implication of not declaring their assets at the given time will lead to the Bureau filing charges against such individuals at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCB).
The immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen was recently removed from office and barred from any public office for 10 years due to non-declaration of his assets.
Key positions affected by this move as provided in the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria are the President, Vice President, Senate President and Deputy Senate President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, whose tenures will be ending on May 29, 2019.
Others include State Governors and their deputies, Speakers and members of the respective State Houses of Assembly, Ministers, Attorney General of the Federation and the respective State Attorneys General, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and State Commissioners, among others.
She added that this move will be applicable to all political office holders in the country from top to bottom.
