Poised to protect his people from the harrowing effects of flooding, Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Onengiyeofori George has pledged drastic action in that regard.
George said this during an inspection tour of ongoing desilting exercise of drainages and sanitation exercise in Da George’s Compound and its environs in Buguma, headquarters of Asari-Toru LGA.
He said painstaking efforts would be deployed to ensure that flooding in Buguma City was a thing of the past, explaining that ridding the LGA’s seat of power would be done through execution of sustained desilting of drainages in the area.
The ASALGA chief executive reiterated his administration’s commitment to entrenching a cleaner environment, noting that the recent prediction by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) that Asari-Toru LGA will be overrun by flooding in 2023 was depressing, hence his administration’s proactive posture.
He warned residents of the area to be wary of discharging debris into the drainages, urging the people of the area to support the government’s proactive steps towards checkmating perennial flooding in the area.
Recall that NiMET, as part of its annual activities, had on Wednesday, January 25, released its 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), a general climatic and weather forecast advisory during the year and the potential impacts on diverse sectors of the economy.
Though the SCP does not replace the daily and five-day weather forecast by NiMet throughout the year, it gives some heads up to policy planners, the business community, and other stakeholders to assist with their forward looking plans.
The NiMet SCP also impacts other aspects of national life like prospective diseases outbreaks, transport modes, as well as, how the farmers grow crops and keep animals.
It is, therefore, understandable the proactive move by the Asari-Toru LGA Chairman to take deliberate actions to save his people from any untoward consequences of avoidable flooding.
