Anambra Police, Civil Society Partner on Justice Reforms, Capacity Building

In a bid to improve justice delivery, scale up the capacity of officers and men of the Nigeria Police in Anambra State, a civil society organization, Rule of law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) today donated a facility to house the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the State to the Police.

The building was commissioned by the State Police Commissioner, John Abang, who used the occasion to reiterate the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command toward proactive policing in accordance with internationally acceptable best practices.

The newly built Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) office is located in Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The project, which was initiated and executed by RoLAC with support from the British Council and European Union (EU), aims at enabling the Police obtain electronic evidence during suspects’ statements or interrogation in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

RoLAC’s Coordinator in Anambra State, Josephine Onah disclosed that aside building the SARS facility, the body also organized training and workshops for senior police officers, as well as, investigative police officers (IPOs) on the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 and modern investigative skills, respectively.

Abang expressed appreciation to RoLAC for providing the Command with the facility, assuring them of continued partnership with the Command under his watch in its efforts to realise its set objectives of technology-driven policing, which was in consonance with the policy objectives of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, in accordance with internationally acceptable best practices.

Recall that on Thursday, January 23, 2020, the Anambra State Justice Sector Reforms team, which was equally sponsored by the British Council under the auspices of its ‘Justice for all’ programme, which has now been replaced by RoLAC led by its Chairman, Justice Peter Obiorah, also paid a courtesy visit on the Commissioner of Police, John Abang at the State Command headquarters.

During the visit, the group sought for the commitment and support of the Police being the primary stakeholder in the administration of justice where complaints about criminal and other unwholesome conduct are first lodged.
