RSHA Intervenes in Heirs Energies House Committee Snub, Affirms RAEL’s Oil Spill Compensations in B-Dere
The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed utmost displeasure over alleged repeated failures of the representatives of Heirs Energies Limited to appear before its House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions during its fourth legislative sitting on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Consequently, the Managing Director and the management team of the company have been ordered to appear before the general assembly on July 20, 2026, after lawmakers considered the committee’s report, which stated that Heirs Energies repeatedly failed to appear before it despite several invitations.
Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, described the company’s alleged non-appearance as unacceptable, warning that the Assembly could invoke its constitutional powers under Section 129 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to compel attendance through a warrant if the company’s officials fail to appear on the scheduled date.
The Assembly noted that the summon follows an earlier concern raised during its previous sitting over the company’s absence during proceedings relating to a petition submitted by the Omuohia Community in Igwuruta.
In a related report presented by same committee, the lawmakers adopted the recommendations regarding an oil spill in B-Dere Community in Gokana Local Government Area linked to Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited.
The House affirmed an assessed compensation of ₦205,813,285.65 for affected residents of the community, describing the amount as fair and commensurate with the environmental damage allegedly caused by equipment failure on the company’s facilities.
The Assembly also urged Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited to undertake a comprehensive cleanup and environmental remediation of the affected area to safeguard public health and restore the impacted environment.
The recommendations followed the presentation of the committee’s report on the oil spill involving the 24-inch Ogale–Bonny pipeline, which was considered by the House during its previous legislative sitting.
