Tension Eases as RIVCOHSMAT Mgt Moves to Improve Students’ Welfare

The Management of the College of Health Sciences and Management Technology (RIVCOHSMAT) Port Harcourt, has reaffirmed its commitment to providing a conducive learning environment for students, following a recent protest on campus.

Acting Provost of the institution, Peace Amadi, gave the assurance while reacting to the development, noting that the management has stepped up efforts to address students’ concerns.

She disclosed that measures are already in place to reduce school fees and improve the provision of essential amenities within the college.

“After the issue came to my knowledge, myself and my management swung into action, we ensured that all the things they were asking for, we were able to provide the ones immediately and since then, we have solved almost all the problems.

The light is on, the water has been restored, the water tank has been washed and their toilets have also been fixed. So generally things have gone back to normal right now”.

Amadi appealed to students to remain calm and cooperative, assuring them that the institution’s leadership is actively working to resolve the issues raised.

“We are praying that the students should be more patient with the management, we are doing our best, and we will continue to do our best. They are our students, we want their comfort, we want their safety and we want their happiness “.

She also commended the Rivers State Government for its prompt intervention, which she said played a key role in de-escalating tensions and facilitating dialogue.

“I want to thank the governor for having the institution at heart and always having a listening ear, but like Oliver twist, were also asking for more.

There are so many things that we need in the institution and we pray that the governor would come to our aid “.

Meanwhile, the Students Union Government (SUG) of the college has expressed satisfaction with the steps taken by management.

SUG President, Justina Gentle-Weli, in an interview with journalists, noted that the improvements, particularly in the provision of basic amenities, have helped restore normalcy on campus.

She added that academic activities have fully resumed across the institution and commended the Acting Provost for what she described as a swift and effective response to students’ demands.

“Right now my school is calm, lectures are going on now.
The demand for that protest was that they should wash the tanks, and fix the pumps, and yesterday then tank was washed, we made sure the tank was washed by the students so that we could supervise the process.
From the response they gave us so far, it shows that they love us”.

A cross section of students who spoke with our correspondent also praised the management for urgently addressing the challenges previously faced on campus.

They observed that the recent improvements have significantly enhanced the learning environment and contributed to a more stable academic atmosphere.

The situation, which had earlier disrupted academic activities, now appears to be under control as both management and students continue to engage constructively.
