Onyeka’s impact was immediate at the Coventry Building Society Arena. In the 12th minute, he struck from distance with precision and power, giving Coventry City an early advantage.
It was his first club goal in nearly two years, dating back to his time at Brentford in April 2024 as Coventry continue their push for promotion.
However, the visitors responded before halftime, as Brereton Díaz found the equaliser to bring Derby County level heading into the break.

The second half delivered more drama, with Jack Rudoni restoring Coventry City’s lead just after the hour mark. Derby County responded again through Díaz, who converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-2.

With the match finely poised, Rudoni struck late to complete his brace and secure all three points for Frank Lampard’s side.
Since joining Coventry on loan from Brentford in February 2026, Onyeka has quickly become a key figure. The move, aimed at giving him consistent playing time, is already proving successful.
There is also a clause that will make the transfer permanent if Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League.
Under Lampard, Onyeka has settled seamlessly into midfield. He has earned praise from the manager for his performances, including an ‘outstanding’ display on his debut against Middlesbrough.
His consistency was further recognised when he picked up a Man of the Match award in a win over West Bromwich Albion.
Coventry City’s strong run of form has coincided with Onyeka’s arrival. The club currently sits top of the Championship table and remains firmly on course for promotion.
The presence of the Super Eagles star has added stability, energy, and control in midfield, while his recent goal shows he can also deliver in key attacking moments.
