‘The Betrayed’ Rakes in ₦14.7 Million in First Week, Ranks Second at Nigerian Box Office

The Nigerian drama The Betrayed has made an impressive debut, earning ₦14.7 million in its first week at the box office.

Written by Tosan Anyafulu and Chinaza Onuzo, the film was released in cinemas on August 2, 2024, and has quickly climbed to second place on the highest-grossing films list for the week ending August 8, 2024, according to a report by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).

Directed by Zulomoke Oyibo, The Betrayed follows a young woman on a psychological journey as she faces the suspicion of a mysterious figure who believes her husband has stolen millions from a crime syndicate.

The film features a star-studded Nollywood cast, including Uche Montana, Gabriel Afolayan, Adunni Ade, Ibrahim Suleiman, Jemima Osunde, Vine Olugu, and Stephanie Zibili.

Despite its strong performance, The Betrayed was outpaced by the Hollywood blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine, which topped the box office with a staggering ₦127 million for the week.

Starring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, the action-packed film has now grossed a total of ₦354.5 million in just two weeks.

Pastor Emmanuel Iren’s What About Us also made a solid showing, finishing third with a weekly gross of ₦9.9 million. Since its release on July 12, the film has accumulated approximately ₦87.5 million in total earnings.

Other notable entries in the top ten include Despicable Me 4, which grossed ₦9.3 million last week and has made ₦74 million since its June 28 release, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which earned ₦7.5 million this past week, bringing its total to ₦455.5 million.

The Nollywood epic Lakatabu secured sixth place with a weekly gross of ₦7.2 million, pushing its cumulative earnings to ₦190.9 million since its release. Inside Out 2 followed closely, earning ₦6.3 million last week and bringing its total gross to ₦93.3 million since June 14.

The action thriller Twisters, released on July 19, ranked eighth with a weekly gross of ₦4.8 million, making its total earnings ₦31 million. A Quiet Place: Day One, which premiered on June 28, grossed ₦4.6 million last week, bringing its total to ₦142 million.

Rounding out the top ten was Muri and Ko, directed by Biodun Stephen, with a weekly gross of ₦3.2 million and a cumulative gross of ₦135 million since its release on June 14.
