Nigerian singer Simi has publicly supported the ongoing nationwide protests against hunger and poor governance. The protests, tagged #EndBadGovernance, began on August 1, 2024, and have seen many Nigerians take to the streets demanding change.

Simi’s tweet, which has gone viral, declares her solidarity with the protesters: “I will ALWAYS stand with my people #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.”

The protests have sparked heated debates on social media, with criticism directed at celebrities for their perceived lack of support for the movement. Amid this backlash, Simi’s statement stands out as a clear message of support for those taking to the streets.

In a related development, DJ Switch, a prominent human rights activist and celebrity disc jockey, has challenged Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and ex-militant Asari Dokubo. Both Wike and Dokubo have issued warnings to protesters, advising them to avoid Rivers State and Abuja.

Dokubo even threatened violence, while Wike vowed not to allow “disgruntled” individuals to disturb the peace of the FCT.

DJ Switch responded defiantly on social media, advising the federal government that only food and good governance can quell the protests.

She wrote, “The only thing that can stop hunger is food! Not guns, not teargas, not threats from fat globs like Asari Dokubo and chicken feed Wike! I wonder why they are hiding now…. Come outside let them eat you raw!”

Switch, who was a leader during the 2020 EndSARS protests, urged citizens to look out for each other during the hunger protests. On August 1, she encouraged Nigerians to see this protest as another opportunity to push for good governance.

“Intimidation is a standard tactic for the Nigerian government. That is all they have… we the people have will and desire for a working Nigeria for all and not a select few! The more they threaten with violence, the more that desire and will for change persists.”

She concluded with a powerful call to action: “Please, do not let this be ENDSARS 2.0, do not fail yourselves and render meaningless the sacrifices we make. Never in history have there been change without sacrifice. The time I believe is now.”

The ongoing protests continue to draw attention as Nigerians from all walks of life demand a better future, standing united against poor governance and economic hardship.
