The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) says it has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident of dead fish discovered along a canal connecting its gas liquefaction plant and Shell Nigeria’s Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal (BOGT) in Bonny, Rivers State.
NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh said this on Thursday, February 22, 2024 in response to an enquiry from Kristina Reports on the issue.
“Our attention has been drawn to reports of dead fish along a canal between our Bonny facility and a nearby facility. NLNG is deeply concerned about these reports, and investigations into the cause and water content have since commenced.”
The company expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both the local community and the environment, informing that the investigations would unravel the cause of the fish’ deaths and the water quality in the affected area.
NLNG stated that it was already engaging with the owners of its “neighbouring facility” and other stakeholders to gather information and collaborate on finding a resolution.
“NLNG is also communicating with neighbouring facility owners and other stakeholders to ascertain the likely cause of the incident.”
The foremost gas company in West Africa called for calm while the investigation continues, urging patience as the outcome of the investigation is awaited, reiterating its dedication to operating safely as a responsible corporate citizen and adhering to global environmental safety standards.
