Seki Dance promoter, Yibo Koko says bickering among politicians in Rivers State has continued to mask its development paradigm.
Koko, who is the Director General of the Rivers State Tourism Development Agency (RSTDA), said this on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 during the 1st Bonny Investment and Tourism Expo (BITE) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He regretted that when “you check the algorithms of conversations online about Rivers State what you see is PDP and APC that covers the space”.
He called for an intentional effort at changing such negative narrative, pointing out that investors and tourists “would ordinarily not want to go put their money where there is crisis”.
Since 2015, Rivers State has been embroiled in political turbulence with investors avoiding the State and businesses shutting down and leaving.
The situation got to a crescendo when the immediate past administration in the State went on a spree of shutting down and sealing off hotels and other business places and in some cases arresting those patronizing such places.
This is aside taskforces harassing traders, transporters and other forms of business especially in the State capital, Port Harcourt, rendering the once thriving city, nicknamed the oil and gas capital of Nigeria, a no-go-area for would-be investors.
Recently loyalists to the former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in the State House of Assembly attempted to impeach the incumbent Governor, which has set off another round of crisis.
Analysts view Yibo Koko’s assertion as apt and timely, given that the economy and development of the State has been in a state of abeyance for several years now.
