Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi has condemned in strong terms the assault and brutality of a yet-to-be-identified man by policemen in a video currently trending on social media.
Police Public Relations Officer for Rivers State, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP), disclosed the Commissioner’s position on the incident in a statement on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
She also disclosed that the policemen in the video have been identified and arrested and are currently at the Command Headquarters undergoing trial for their unprofessional conduct, stressing that this will serve as deterrent to other police personnel.
Iringe-Koko appealed to the victim to come forward to the Public Relations Department of the Rivers State Police Command to give his own statement so as to aid conclusion of the investigations and his identity will be protected.
According to her, the Commissioner of Police assures members of the public that the implicated police operatives will be investigated in line with extant rules underlying the conduct of police personnel and appropriate sanctions meted accordingly.
The command further “assured the good people of Rivers State of its unalloyed commitment to promoting the rule of law”.
