BYF/Perekule Unity Cup 2019, a football tournament which aims to consolidate the bond of unity among youths of the federating chieftaincy houses of Bonny Kingdom in Bonny Local Government Area, kicks off today.

The tournament, which is jointly organized by the Bonny Youths Federation (BYF) and Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, will have teams from all 35 chieftaincy house of Bonny Kingdom.

The township stadium, Finima, Bonny is the kick-off venue and 3pm is the kick-off time.

According to the leader of the BYF, “the tournament is a way of further building bonds amongst brothers. As we know, football is one game that unites people of different ethnic groups, how much more people from same community”.

Kristina Reports reliably learnt that the Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited sponsored programme was supposed to be held in 2018 but was postponed due to inexplicable reasons to this year.

There have been insinuations that Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited released a whooping sum of N10 million to the BYF for the tournament and that members of the BYF Central Executive Council (CEC) hid the cash and only released a paltry sum which has hampered the smooth organization of the event.

But the Community Liaison Officer of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited in Bonny, Bara Kabaka Brown debunked such insinuations, stating that his company never released such amount of money to the BYF.

He described those spreading such ‘unfounded rumour’ as “simply those who for one reason or the other are just not comfortable with peace, unity and development”.

The statement partly reads: “Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited did not give Bonny Youth Federation N10m to organise a football competition.”

“Please, may it be known that I am the officer of Mobil directly supervising the competition and they (BYF) got less than what is being insinuated. Even if they are given N20m to organise the magnitude of competition they proposed, it’s a well-meaning initiative.”

Brown stressed that “with what BYF got, I know they are even bleeding to see to the success of the competition”.

The BYF appealed to everyone, especially the youths of Bonny Kingdom to turn en masse to grace the tournament today as it kicks off.
