The Central Bank of Nigeria has finally spoken up on the rumoured sack of its Governor, Godwin Emefiele by the Federal Government yesterday.
Emefiele was said to have been directed via a letter from the Presidency to proceed on retirement leave, a development which sparked reactions across the nation coming few days after the presidential elections.
But the apex bank debunked the rumour, saying the CBN boss was in his office carrying out his routine duties.
CBN’s spokesman, Isaac Okoroafor, in a phone chat debunked the rumour, saying that the governor was in his office carrying out his daily duties.
In his words: “I don’t understand what you mean…as I speak to you, the CBN governor (Emefiele) is in his office performing his duties”.
Emefiele was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in June, 2014 by the then President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan. He had previously served as Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc.
Before his foray into the banking sector, he lectured Finance and Insurance at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of Port Harcourt, respectively.
He is an alumnus of Executive Education at Stanford University, Harvard University (2004) and Wharton School of Business (2005).
Emefiele holds a B.Sc. degree in Finance in 1984 and an MBA Degree in Finance in 1986, both from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
