Shock and palpable tension have gripped the United States after President Donald Trump announced early morning of Friday, October 2, 2020 via his verified twitter handle, @realDonaldTrump, that he and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the Coronavirus.
The breaking story which threatens to add more uncertainty to one of the most uncertain presidential elections in US political history broke when most Americans were already settling into bed, but will now wake up to news of a presidential crisis, the likes that has not been seen since after the shooting of former US President, Ronald Reagan in March 1981 while he exited the Washington Hilton Hotel.
It is not yet clear how the 74 year old president who was just on a debate stage with his election opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden two days ago, caught the virus.
But earlier in the night, it was announced that his close political aide, Hope Hilkes had tested positive, causing analysts to wonder if the President contracted the virus from his much younger associate.
In the meantime, the President also announced in his tweet that he and the First Lady will now go into quarantine as they commence treatment.
The White House further announced the cancellation of the President’s daily schedule, adding, however, that he will still attend a campaign fund raiser via telephone.
Since the global explosion of the Covid-19 pandemic in March, the United States has suffered the brunt of global cases and the perceived mismanagement of the pandemic in the United States has been a hot topic on the Presidential trail.
No doubt, this will add more fuel to the already ragging Us COVID-19 pandemic fire given that Trump is one person that has been living in denial so far as COVID-19 is concerned.
Meanwhile, the White House is yet to outline how the Presidency will operate while Trump quarantines and if the Vice President, Mike Pence will act in Mr. Trump’s stead, just as British Foreign Secretary Dominic Rabb stood in for British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson when he became the first leader of a major Western power to contract the virus early this year.
Reactions from other American political leaders have been slow since the ground-breaking story emerged out just after midnight, Local United States time.
As events unfold, we will no doubt, hear from Mr. Trump’s challenger, former Vice president Joe Biden, Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives and second in line to the Presidency, Nancy Pelosi and, of course, other Republican allies of the President in Congress and across the United States.
This is a fast and rapidly developing story, stay with us for new developments…
