Sacked Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Lawal Musa Daura, has been arrested and detained. His sack came on the heels of a blockade of the National Assembly complex early Tuesday morning by masked armed operatives of the DSS.
Senators, members of the House of Representatives, and staff of the National Assembly were prevented by the armed operatives from gaining entrance into their offices, saying they had “orders from above”.
Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo came down hard on Daura as the uproar trailing the blockade gained momentum, ordering him to handover to the next most senior officer in the service.
Osinbajo, who announced the sack via a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, condemned the illegal takeover of the National Assembly complex, describing it as a violation of the Constitution.
There have been concerns that Lawal Daura, who happens to be President Muhammadu Buhari’s cousin, has, since his appointment as head of Nigeria’s secret police, been in the news for the wrong reasons.
Aside the service, under his leadership, underperforming in terms of massive intelligence failure, which has helped hike security challenges across the country, it was responsible for producing two contradictory reports which the Senate relied on to reject the confirmation of the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibahim Magu.
The service also came under widespread criticism by the Nigerian masses when it prevented the arrest of its immediate past director general, Ita Ekpenyong, and a former director general of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayodele Oke.
Many a close watcher have wondered what the DSS has been up as the menace of alleged herdsmen attacks ravaged the Middle Belt states of Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Zamfara, and Adamawa.
There were insinuations that the sacked DSS DG was working for the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the opposition against his kinsman, Buhari.
