In a bid to review the 2019 general elections, Nigeria’s electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is planning to hold a stakeholders meeting and national conversation to review the 2019 General Elections.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of INEC, Professor Yakubu Mahmood in Abuja on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 during the Commission’s meeting with its Resident Electoral Commissioners.
He said that there was need for the commission to organize a crucial national conversation on the country’s electoral process.
He said, “This process must be qualitatively different from what was done in the past.
“Today’s meeting with the RECs is the first in a series of engagements within the commission and with all stakeholders”.
He agreed that until the electoral process is gotten right, efforts on nation-building and promoting peace and progress shall remain epileptic.
He added that for the next two months, during the course of the national conversation the commission will engage all stakeholders including its officials at local and state levels, representatives of ad hoc officials, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media, development partners, traditional and religious organizations and election observers.
He however urged for a robust dialogue, reports of previous committees on electoral reforms must be taken into consideration.
