Police To Sanction DPO, Two Officers Over Disappearance Of Suspect From Custody
The Nigeria Police Force is set to sanction a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and two other personnel over the disappearance of a suspect from custody.
The decision follows public outcry after a viral video emerged online, showing residents narrating how the suspect vanished while under police supervision. The video, which spread widely on social media, triggered calls for accountability from the public and human rights advocates.

Although the police station where the incident occurred has not been officially disclosed, the police leadership confirmed that the officers responsible for the suspect’s custody are facing an internal disciplinary investigation.
According to the Force, the sanctions are to address the breach of custody protocol that led to the escape.
The disappearance of suspects from detention remains a major concern within the security system, often raising questions about the integrity of detention facilities and adherence to standard operating procedures.
Investigators are probing whether the incident was caused by administrative negligence, a physical breach of the facility, or deliberate misconduct and possible collusion between officers on duty and criminal elements.
The DPO and the two officers risk disciplinary measures ranging from suspension to dismissal, depending on the findings of the internal committee.
The development comes at a time when public trust in the police is under scrutiny, with frequent complaints over the handling of detainees and transparency of operations.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly called for stricter oversight to prevent such incidents, noting that the disappearance of suspects obstructs justice and allows criminals evade prosecution.
The police command is yet to announce a date for the conclusion of the investigation but said the process will be carried out in line with the Force’s regulations.
