Game Over for Prof Abbey as Minister Approves Recruitment of New Rector

By Emmanuel Nwafor

Nov 30, 2022

The frantic attempts by the outgoing Rector of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, Professor Tamunoimim Abbey to perpetuate himself in office has now been rested as the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has approved the recruitment of a new Rector for the institution.

Unconfirmed sources hint Kristina Reports that ten days after he was directed to proceed on terminal leave, Prof. Abbey has not only remained in office but has continued to unleash administrative shenanigans on the institution.

Kristina Reports has reliably learnt that he directed the issuing of a query to the Bursar of the institution and has made some appointments.

The Education Minister’s approval was conveyed via a letter with reference number: DTE/POLY/273//1/11/178 dated 30th November, 2022 and signed by the Permanent Secretary in his Ministry, Andrew David Adejo, as sighted by Kristina Reports.

Adamu, according to the letter, concurred with the directive of the Governing Council that Prof. Abbey proceed on terminal leave as from 23rd November, 2022 in lieu of the expiration of his non-renewable five years tenure on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

The directive was conveyed via a letter with reference number: FPOG/REG/002/VOL 2/99 dated 24th November, 2022 and signed by the Registrar/Secretary to the Governing Council, Altina Boma-George.

The said letter, which was copied to the Registrar of the Polytechnic and Prof. Tamunoimim Abbey, is reproduced below:

RE: EXPIRATION OF TENURE OF APPOINTMENT OF PROF TAMUONIMO ABBEY, RECTOR(FPOG) BONNY

Your letter of 21st November 2022, which was also the main content of a letter written by the Registrar/Secretary to the Governing Council Reference No. FPOG/REG/OO2/VOL 99 dated 24th November 2022 on the above subject refers, please.

I wish to convey the Honourable Minister of Education’s approval of the above referenced communication by the Registrar requesting Prof. Tamunoimim Abbey to proceed on Terminal leave with effect from 23rd November 2022 and to hand over all the Polytechnic’s properties in his possession to the Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny.

You are also to commence the process for the recruitment of a new Rector, which should have started before now.

I wish to assure you of the Ministry’s cooperation on all actions of the Governing Council that is anchored on Public Service Rules, Federal Polytechnic Act (As Amended), and Due Process.

Please accept the warm regards of the Honourable Minister.”

Knowledgeable sources infer that this puts a closure to the crisis rocking the Polytechnic for some time as efforts by the outgoing Rector to perpetuate himself in office has now met a brick wall.

Penultimate Monday, November 21, 2022, Prof Tamunoimim Abbey had resumed office amidst fanfare over his victory at the National Industrial Court sitting in Port Harcourt, which set aside his suspension from office and ordered his reinstatement.

The dramatic return, which had a grand reception by his friends and well-wishers as part of the package but was halted by security advice, was viewed by many as meant to spite the Governing Council and project him as invincible.

Please can you publish the full content of the National Industrial Court judgment on the said matter so that the general public can be properly guided accordingly to avoid contemptuous position in the Polytechnic of Oil & Gas Bonny saga?
